Fishing Hooks
Fishing hooks are devices containing bait that fish bite on and in so doing become impaled on the sharp barb. A fishhook is shaped somewhat like a question mark with a rounded top. In order to catch fish, they must be attached to a line or a fishing pole to bring the fish to land or to the side of a boat.
The fishing hook has been named as one of the most indispensable tools in history. It has been around for many centuries. These devises have been made from a variety of materials depending on what was available in the environment, all of which has to be quite strong.
There are several parts to a fishing hook. The point is the part that enters the fish’s mouth, the barb is the part that sticks into the flesh and the eye is a small circle in the end to which the line is attached. Then there is the bend and the shank, the parts that connect the eye with the point and the gap is the distance between the point and the shank.
The point and the barb are the most important parts of the hook. They length of the point determines how well it will penetrate the mouth of the fish and thus influences the success of the catch. The barb will influence how deep the point penetrates and this holds the fish while you reel it in.
There are various names of fishing hooks depending on the sizes of these various components. There are also bait hooks, fly hooks and lure hooks used for various fishing purposes. Hooks can also have up to three eyes depending on the type of fishing the angler is engaged in. For example, fishing for salmon generally involves using a double hook, while fly fishing involves using a treble hook.
